Ashton kicked off the first competitive game of the season in the Challenge Cup first round versus Warton Typhoons.
Despite the enthusiasm amongst the players before kick off Ashton were unable to get out of first gear. The players were guilty of slack passing which lead to a lack of possession of the football in midfield.
Having said that both teams had very few clean attempts at goal in the first half and Ashton could have taken the lead if Michael Robinson's effort was the other side of the post.
As the second half drew on it looked increasingly likely that whoever broke the deadlock would go on to win the game.
Warton's number 9 was a threat all game and it was he who picked the ball up on the left and drove to the byeline beating the Ashton players for pace before cutting back to his team mate to slot into an empty net and put his team in the driving seat. Waverly
From then on Warton used the size of the pitch to their advantage and moved the ball across the back frustrating the Ashton forwards as they retained possession and ran the clock down. Late on Warton's number 9 found himself in space 20 yards out and hit an unstoppable effort into the top corner to dampen any hope Ashton had of getting back into the game.
Ashton will now be in the draw for the Presidents Shield.
The team will now be focused on the League campaign which kicks off on Thursday night against relegated Waverley who won their game on Sunday on penalties.
Man of the Match goes to Mike Tattersall who put 100% in for the full 90 minutes.
At the end of each month, one player will be awarded with the 'Performance of the Month'. The award will be presented before kick off of the last game of each month.
Lets look to make an impression on the league this season.
