Ashton yet again narrowly missed out on claiming well deserved points losing by the single goal away at St. Theresas.
Ashton fell behind early on when a long throw was flicked on to the far post and bundled in to give the home team the advantage.
A few minutes later Ashton had settled and had acclimatised to the poor state of the pitch. The team began to play some good football and creating a number of chances but were unable to capitalise. The main threat was down the right hand side with Tom Bonnick having the better of the defender on numerous occasions.
With just one goal separating the teams at half time, Ashton maintained the tempo in the the second half and were working the ball well in midfield. However St. Theresas managed to catch the Ribblers out wth a counter attack. A cross into the box was intercepted and a long ball allowed the home team to break 2 vs 2. The striker worked enough space to hit a hard drive past Benji Walker in goal.
Ashton didnt let the 2 goal advantage get them down and they continued to press to get back into the game. MOTM Matt Wiggins worked tirelessly in the middle of the park and provided the starting point for many of the attacks.
Chris King battled hard to win the ball and played himself in for a one on one with keeper before rounding him to net Ashtons only goal of the game.
With 20 minutes left the lads pressed well looking for the equaliser, Steve Thomas delivered a number of dangerous balls into the box from set pieces, with one being headed onto the foot of the post by captain Mike Tattersall. Matt Wiggins later hit the post with a long range effort and Phil Armistead hit a decent effort inches wide on his debut.
Had the game been able to run on anther 10 minutes Ashton may have been able to find a way through but the final whistle blew with the scores at 2-1 which saw the home side return to the top of the league.
Again Ashton were unlucky to come away with nothing, but based on the performance the lads should come away with the drive and desire to work hard on the training pitch to help turn the recent performances in to the fully deserved 3 points.
