AORFC 3 vs 2 BRIGG FC

Ashton came from behind to record a confidence boosting 3 vs 2 victory over Division 2 side Brigg FC.
For the majority of the first half Ashton were able to contain a strong Brigg side and they rarely threatened the goal.
An early injury to Tom Bonnick who was making his Ashton debut meant an unplanned change was required which created a period of confusion amongst the lads. The team lost their shape and Brigg were able to catch Ashton on the break and quickly found themselves two up with two swift moves resulting in tap ins for the Brigg forwards.
Ashton regrouped at half time and welcomed back Michael Robinson for his first game of pre season and the team started the second half stronger and more organised.
Brigg reshuffled their team for the start of the second half and unfortunately found themselves having to make an unplanned substitution when their main threat upfront took an accidental boot to the face. A penalty could have been given but the referee deemed the collision as accidental and the game restarted with a goal kick.
At that point the game swung in favour of the home side and Ashton soon pulled a goal back when Ben Grimshaw chased down a sloppy back pass to round the keeper and fire in from a tight angle.
Not long after that Ashton were level. Some quick interchanging of passes between the attacking midfielders set Ben Grimshaw through one on one to bag his second goal for the club.
Both teams pressed for a goal to win the game but it was Ashton who had the clearer of the opportunities, two of the simplest were squandered by Rob Cuff and Chris King who on any other day would have buried both chances.
Chris King did redeem himself by netting the winner with just 10 minutes remaining. Good work from Andy Yates on the left was topped off with a nice cross to which Chris King beat his man to the ball to fire in past the keeper.
With the score at 3-2 Ashton tightened up and refused to let the battling opposition back into the game.
A well earned victory from a good competitive match - the perfect outcome of a pre season fixture.
The team are looking good with a strong and competitive squad of players. Next week Ashton travel to the Leisure Lakes to take on Preston Sector of Division 3.
