Ashton completed their first pre season fixture with a good run out against one of the promoted teams from last season Albrighton FC.

Ashton had a limited squad with numerous players still away on their summer holidays which paved the way for 3 summer signings to make their debuts. Scott Dixon and Josh Watkinson lined up at the back whilst Ben Grimshaw took to the field in a new look attacking formation.

It was Scott and Josh who probably had the more difficult of games as Albrighton's strengths lay in their pace and power going forward.

Ashton took the lead early on with a good passing move setting Rob Cuff free to beat the keeper one on one.

The scores were soon level when the Albrighton striker reacted quickest to slot home after Benji Walker palmed a speculative effort away from goal.

Albrighton managed to take the lead with their second effort on goal. A shot from outside the area bounced in off the foot of the post.

Despite the score line the first half was a fairly even encounter with Ashton calving out some good chances, Ben Grimshaw twice stung the hands of the opposition's keeper with some rasping efforts.

A laps 15 minutes in the second half was all it took for Albrighton to take a 3 goal lead. Ashton struggled to get the ball under control and retain possession and allowed a mazy run from the Albrighton defender all the way through to finish and put his side 3-1 up.

A freak bobbled minutes later sent the ball high and over Stuart Hames' head who had been poised to easily control the ball had it not hit the one dodgy bit of pitch on what was an all round nice flat surface. The balled sailed straight into the path of Albrighton's Phil Leathard who does not miss opportunities like that and looped the ball over Benji's head.

Ashton failed to give up and ensured they got the maximum benefits from the first 90 minutes of the season. A nice passing move ended with Chris King curling in from the edge of the area to make it 4-2.

Both teams will have appreciated the game and gained the needed fitness from the work out.

Next week Ashton take on an even tougher opponent in the high flying Brigg FC at the high school.
